According
to the Federal Government, the death rate of the emergence of Lassa fever has
increased to 43.2 per cent and has claimed the lives of more people. This was
made known in Abuja on Friday.
The
announcement was made during a news conference, where it was said that the
death toll has increased to 40 from the 35 that was reported on Thursday,
bringing the total number of Lassa fever cases recorded to
86.
During the news
conference, the Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole, stated that two
more states have been affected by the disease; Plateau and Gombe state. Adding
that, there has been new outbreak of the disease, as laboratories have
confirmed 17 new cases.
Adewale
said, “The total number of reported cases, so far, is 86 while there
have been 40 deaths, with a mortality rate of 43.2 per cent. Our laboratories
have confirmed 17 cases, indicative of a new roundtrip of Lassa fever
outbreak.”
He added that, “modalities have been put in place to curb the
spread of the disease, which can also occur and be transmitted in health
facilities where infection prevention and control practices are not observed.”
Adewole said.
